High-res version
After a five year hiatus due to the pandemic, at least for me, it was great to get back to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival this year. So much music! There are always favourite acts to catch, like Gregory Alan Isakov and Watchhouse, but the best thing is finding new favourites. This year that included Little Quirks, Julian Taylor and Mari Rosehill, and too many to list individually. In all I counted 36 different acts that I was able to catch, and that’s barely more than half of the acts appearing there.
Top new song, for me, was the tragic ‘County Road’ by Margo Price. Those who live in rural areas are often too well acquainted with the risks attendant with kids and their wheels on the back roads. There’s much more to the song than that, but it’s part of it.
“Hey kid, where ya goin’ with those brand new wheels you got?
You think you’re gonna last forever, forever says you’re not …”
Edmonton Folk Festival tends to stage acts with new work, and so I compiled a playlist of what I thought were 18 stand out, great new songs. I threw in a couple of classics by my favourites. Here are the links for Youtube Music and Spotify.
